Amethyst is a type of quartz which grows as transparent terminated crystals forming into natural clusters, geodes or single points. It has a striking purple hue ranging from very light lavender to deep violet. It is found in many places around the world and has been cherished over thousands of years for its beauty and powerful healing abilities. Ancient Egyptians wore amethyst as a symbol of luxury and to protect them from evil spirits, whilst the ancient Greeks drank wine from goblets made of amethyst as a way to prevent drunkenness !

Amethyst geodes are hollow rocks with Amethyst crystals lining the inner walls. When lava flows, natural gas cavities are formed from bubbles. These cavities then fill up with a silica-rich liquid containing trace amounts of iron. Over time the liquid forms crystals - six-sided pyramids of Amethyst. Crystals with a range of purple hues, from the lightests lilac to deep dark purples are created when there is a trace of iron in the liquid.
