Tiger's Eye is formed when Quartz is formed over crocidolite, eventually completely replacing is. During this replacement process, iron deposits with crocidolite dissolve, staining the quartz giving Tiger's Eye its golden yellow to brown colour. The name comes from its slightly shiny, silky lustre giving it a striking chatoyant, striped appearance, similar to that of a cat's eye. It can also be found in pinky colours as well as blues and reds. Tiger's Eye is most commonly found in the US, Mexico, India, Australia and South Africa. As well as the general attributes, different coloured Tiger's Eye have specific additional properties.
A protective stone that has been traditionally worn as a talisman to ward off curses and ill wishes, the Ancient Egyptians believed the iridescence of Tiger's Eye were an expression of divine vision and used the stone to represent eyes in the creation of great deities. Roman soldiers wore it as an amulet on their breastplates during battle.
